I would like to share an amazing experience with you. When I went walking in the arroyo (river bed) this morning, the sun was peaking through some soft clouds that were dotted against the piercing blue sky that we are blessed with everyday in New Mexico. I love the mornings here, when the air is crisp and fresh and the chipmunks are scampering about in their playfulness. This is the time I reserve for my communion with Spirit and as I clear my mind of thoughts and breathe in the new day, I open my heart to all the blessings and gifts from the universe.
I glanced over to the other side of the arroyo and noticed a lovely dog seated and poised as if he was watching the sunrise. I thought it most unusual that he would be seated so calmly, unlike the behaviors of runaway dogs who find freedom such a new experience, that they run recklessly and gleefully. As I got closer to this animal, I noticed that he was not a dog, but a coyote. He saw me and immediately got up and walked ahead, alert and watchful. He was quite a specimen, with his lustrous coat shining and gleaming in the sun. What caught my eye was his beautiful tail; thick and luminescent, like the tail of a fox. I continued walking and then noticed that there was another coyote, perhaps his mate, about 20 feet behind. I stood and watched as she ran to catch up with him, appreciating their presence and anticipating playfulness, which is the gift of the coyotes.
After a lovely walk, I headed home. Halfway into my return, I was in awe as I watched this bird fly towards me. It glided effortlessly to about five feet to my side and I was stunned that it flew so close to me where it was almost flying at eye level. I could see the top of its head and wings. I stood frozen on the spot and just as it was going to crash into me, the hawk made an 90 degree turn and veered away from me straight towards a brick wall. A black cat was perched on top of the brick wall and as the hawk glided above the wall, it swooped right in front of the cat, startling it. I was amazed by its approach as I know hawks are messengers of Spirit. I stood and thanked the hawk and Spirit for this incredible gift as I felt my own heart soaring with joy, love and gratitude. May the Great Spirit be the wind beneath your wings!
